Bosch 36618-02 is an 18-Volt cordless drill kit – one of the things which makes this kit stand out is that it is a Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery drill kit.  Another nice feature which comes with all of the 18 volt Bosch tools is the ability to use slim or fat battery packs.  This particular kit from Amazon comes with 2 slim battery packs which makes the drill lighter and easier to use throughout the day.

As a side note: this is the first cordless drill kit which we sold through Amazon here at Drills HQ before this review was even published.  This cordless drill kit really stands out when it comes to quality, power and price point.  The Bosch 36618-02 is currently ranked #15 in the home improvement / drills section at Amazon.  Again, from the research we’ve done online across multiple retailers and review sites, this cordless drill kit has fantastic reviews everywhere we look.  One thing which we noticed through some of the reviews we read was that the main downside was the length of time the batteries would hold a charge.  This is easily remedied by using the “fat” pack, and even if you do not want to purchase one of the larger capacity battery packs, the slim packs charge very quickly – they are rated to acquire an 85% charge in 15 minutes.

Another recurring theme which we found online, especially when this drill kit was compared to DeWalt, was that the comparisons were commonly made between DeWalt’s NiCad batteries and the Bosch 36618-02 cordless drill Li-Ion battery pack.  One post we read was very interesting, the writer did a calculation based on a comparison of holes drilled per battery weight.  The Bosch 36618-02 outperformed the DeWalt DC720 almost 2:1 based on test performed. Okay, so my brother was here helping me do some work on our laundry room.  We had to tear off the sheet rock from the back and clean up the studs and then re-rock everything.  In these situations I get a bit overzealous…  Out comes the cordless drill and IN go the screws… all the way in…

However, you know it, I know it and my brother knew it – once you break the paper on the sheet rock (once you drive the head of the screw past the paper and counter-sink it) it does no good – it will NOT hold the rock for any length of time.  So, Brian (my bro) grabs the cordless drill from me and proceeds to show me this nifty trick that he uses out on the job site.

This trick can be used with either a corded or cordless drill.  It does take some testing and practice but once you get the hang of it, it really is a pretty handy trick.

Okay, so what you do, is you drive that friggin’ screw in until the head is almost at the paper/rock.  Then, you flip the speed back to its slowest setting and crank the clutch to about its mid-range – you want it set to where it is tight enough that it doesn’t click, but not so tight that if you exceed the pressure of the drill trigger too much the screw pushes into the rock and halfway into the wall behind it!  note: if you are a pro, you probably don’t need to mess with the clutch, but for us hobbyists and DIY enthusiasts – do IT!

Now, you just simply depress the trigger until you begin to feel resistance between the screw head and the drill bit – and just twist the drill… Viola!  You are using your drill as a manual screwdriver, without having to switch tools out and you are not countersinking the dang drywall screws into the rock!

This Porter Cable drill has a lot of power, speed and torque.

The PC180DK-2 drill kit is one of the mid-range 18 volt cordless drills with regards to weight on the market.  However, as far as torque goes, you can almost not choose better than this drill.  Some reviews say that this drill has some challenges when it comes to speed and battery life, but, there are a lot of owners who say that the speed on this drill is just fine and that the batteries hold a charge for a long time.  One owner says, “this is the ‘torquest’ drill I have used…the batteries hold their charge for a long time – recharge time is quick.”

Based on the research we have done, we believe that this Porter Cable drill combo makes an excellent home drill, but is probably not the absolute best choice for commercial use, but for the price, we think it will fit the bill very nicely at home for DIY enthusiasts working on projects which require a lot of power and torque – Deck projects, making home-made furniture, drywall or other special projects which use larger screws requiring countersinking.

Please note:  As a general rule – it is not advisable to overheat a drill.  This is not specific to this Porter Cable drill, it is just an important note that if you notice your drill heating up, you need to keep in mind that each drill, just like any electrical component, has a duty cycle which, if you exceed, will cause permanent damage to the tool.  This goes for any drill whether it is DeWalt, Black & Decker or a Porter Cable drill, I expect that some who end up complaining about motors “whining” or experience other motor “defects” have exceeded the appropriate duty cycle for the drill they own.  As my Dad always used to say, “Take care of your tools, and they will take care of you.”

However, the DeWalt DCD970KL is a hammerdrill, and any hammerdrill will function slightly different than a standard drill. With a little patience to adjust, I think you will find this drill kit to be a great addition to your repertoire of high quality tools. My first hammerdrill took some time to get used to, but once I did, I loved it – my current hammerdrill is a DeWalt corded drill.

First, let me thank you for stopping by to read this review on the DeWalt DC970K-2, it is our first review and I hope you find it helpful.  As you may know, DeWalt tools are known for building tools for rugged use and they are referred to as the “Musclebots” of this class of tool.  Even though this DeWalt DC970K-2 18-Volt Cordless drill is lightweight and able to fit in spaces that other drills would have a tough time maneuvering in, it is still built with the high quality DeWalt 2 speed transmission which has built up DeWalt’s reputation for making high quality drills over the years.  The ranges provided by this unit’s transmission goes from 0 to 450 rpm on the low end and up to 1,500 rpm on the high end.

At 5.2lbs the DeWalt DC970K-2 is light enough to be handled all day without causing user fatigue.  And, as mentioned above, its compact size at 8.7 inches (Depth) by 2.5 inches (Width) and battery placement allow it to fit into very tight spaces.  While its smaller size is one of its best features – I was initially concerned that the drill would not have the power required for home repair enthusiasts and especially contractors who require a more rugged, long lasting and powerful drill when they are out on the job site.
