[Amazon Rating by Actual Customers 4.8 / 5 Stars]

Bosch 36618-02 is an 18-Volt cordless drill kit – one of the things which makes this kit stand out is that it is a Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery drill kit. Another nice feature which comes with all of the 18 volt Bosch tools is the ability to use slim or fat battery packs. This particular kit from Amazon comes with 2 slim battery packs which makes the drill lighter and easier to use throughout the day.

As a side note: this is the first cordless drill kit which we sold through Amazon here at Drills HQ before this review was even published. This cordless drill kit really stands out when it comes to quality, power and price point. The Bosch 36618-02 is currently ranked #15 in the home improvement / drills section at Amazon. Again, from the research we’ve done online across multiple retailers and review sites, this cordless drill kit has fantastic reviews everywhere we look. One thing which we noticed through some of the reviews we read was that the main downside was the length of time the batteries would hold a charge. This is easily remedied by using the “fat” pack, and even if you do not want to purchase one of the larger capacity battery packs, the slim packs charge very quickly – they are rated to acquire an 85% charge in 15 minutes.

Another recurring theme which we found online, especially when this drill kit was compared to DeWalt, was that the comparisons were commonly made between DeWalt’s NiCad batteries and the Bosch 36618-02 cordless drill Li-Ion battery pack. One post we read was very interesting, the writer did a calculation based on a comparison of holes drilled per battery weight. The Bosch 36618-02 outperformed the DeWalt DC720 almost 2:1 based on test performed. Check out this cool interactive demo to the right to get a “feel” for the features of this drill kit.

As of the writing of this cordless drill review article, Amazon has the Bosch 36618-02 at a massive 54% discount with FREE Shipping! This means you can purchase this drill kit for less than $150. If you believe this tool is the right one for you, make sure to click the link above.

Please note: FREE Shipping is available through Amazon’s “Super Saver Shipping” be sure to review the Details after clicking the link above.

Bosch 36618-02 cordless drill kit features:

2 18 V Slim batteries (using the Litheon technology)

Fully charged in 30 minutes / 85% charge in 15 mins

1,600 RPM with 500 in/lbs torque

Easy 1-handed bit changing

20 different clutch settings with a variable speed trigger

The Bosch 36618-02 cordless drill kit is currently one of the highest rated drills we have found available today – and the price makes it accessible for every level of user from the hobbyist, to the professional.

Please read what one owner had to say about his Bosch 36618-02 cordless drill kit

I wish I had two Bosch 36618-02 drills – 1 to pre drill and the other to drive screws – The clutch is smooth and prevents damage caused by over-driving screws into the material. The torque is extremely well tuned and seems consistent irregardless of battery charge. It is very solidly constructed and it is the best drill I have ever owned (I’ve had 4 previous drills before this one)… (Starlino)

Okay, so my brother was here helping me do some work on our laundry room. We had to tear off the sheet rock from the back and clean up the studs and then re-rock everything. In these situations I get a bit overzealous… Out comes the cordless drill and IN go the screws… all the way in…

However, you know it, I know it and my brother knew it – once you break the paper on the sheet rock (once you drive the head of the screw past the paper and counter-sink it) it does no good – it will NOT hold the rock for any length of time. So, Brian (my bro) grabs the cordless drill from me and proceeds to show me this nifty trick that he uses out on the job site.

This trick can be used with either a corded or cordless drill. It does take some testing and practice but once you get the hang of it, it really is a pretty handy trick.

Okay, so what you do, is you drive that friggin’ screw in until the head is almost at the paper/rock. Then, you flip the speed back to its slowest setting and crank the clutch to about its mid-range – you want it set to where it is tight enough that it doesn’t click, but not so tight that if you exceed the pressure of the drill trigger too much the screw pushes into the rock and halfway into the wall behind it! note: if you are a pro, you probably don’t need to mess with the clutch, but for us hobbyists and DIY enthusiasts – do IT!

Now, you just simply depress the trigger until you begin to feel resistance between the screw head and the drill bit – and just twist the drill… Viola! You are using your drill as a manual screwdriver, without having to switch tools out and you are not countersinking the dang drywall screws into the rock!

I hope this is helpful to some, and to those who don’t find it helpful – well, good on you!

Ciao for now!

The Black & Decker HPD18AK-2 18-Volt Drill Kit has been in the top 100 for a whopping 904 days and at the time of this writing is currently #2 in the Amazon Best Cordless Drills category.

You may notice the video to the left is not specifically about the Black & Decker HPD18AK-2. We have been spending time writing a lot about how to choose from one of the many best cordless drills that are available and we really liked the opening lines of this video, essentially, that you need to consider what you are going to use the drill for BEFORE you buy it; before you research it; and before you try to find the best deal on it.

Now regarding the Black & Decker HPD18AK-2 18-Volt Drill Kit – I really like seeing a drill kit which is moving up the ranks aggressively – This particular drill kit is a fantastic value when you consider features and price point. As you will see below, this cordless drill provides great torque for various high torque applications and it comes with an all metal chuck – This, combined with a clutch which provides 32 positions make this drill a value in the $119 to $169 range. However, in doing my research for this review, I found this 18V Cordless Drill, currently going on Amazon for less than $90 – Click this link to take advantage of this amazing 47% Discount on the Black & Decker HPD18AK-2 at Amazon.

Please remember, we do make a small commission if you purchase the drill through the links in this article, and that helps us keep the site going so that we can continue to bring you great reviews and a ‘centralized’ location on the internet to learn about anything you need to with regards to Drills; the best cordless drills; the best cordless drills reviews; and the best cordless drills deals.

The Black & Decker HPD18AK-2 18-Volt High Performance Drill also has these additional features:

The kit comes with 2 18V batteries, a charger, the box for the kit and a 10 piece bit set.

It has great high torque usefulness | 0 – 350 RPM | It can provide 330 inch/pounds of torque

It supports up to 1400 RPM when you need to use it for a high speed job

The Black & Decker HPD18AK-2 has a spindle lock and a 100% all metal chuck

There are currently not that many reviews on this kit – Right now Amazon seems to have the largest “cluster” of customer reviews at about 20 – However, all of the reviews so far are overwhelmingly positive – 16 5 star ratings and 4 4 star ratings.

The PC180DK-2 drill kit is one of the mid-range 18 volt cordless drills with regards to weight on the market. However, as far as torque goes, you can almost not choose better than this drill. Some reviews say that this drill has some challenges when it comes to speed and battery life, but, there are a lot of owners who say that the speed on this drill is just fine and that the batteries hold a charge for a long time. One owner says, “this is the ‘torquest’ drill I have used…the batteries hold their charge for a long time – recharge time is quick.”

Based on the research we have done, we believe that this Porter Cable drill combo makes an excellent home drill, but is probably not the absolute best choice for commercial use, but for the price, we think it will fit the bill very nicely at home for DIY enthusiasts working on projects which require a lot of power and torque – Deck projects, making home-made furniture, drywall or other special projects which use larger screws requiring countersinking.

Please note: As a general rule – it is not advisable to overheat a drill. This is not specific to this Porter Cable drill, it is just an important note that if you notice your drill heating up, you need to keep in mind that each drill, just like any electrical component, has a duty cycle which, if you exceed, will cause permanent damage to the tool. This goes for any drill whether it is DeWalt, Black & Decker or a Porter Cable drill, I expect that some who end up complaining about motors “whining” or experience other motor “defects” have exceeded the appropriate duty cycle for the drill they own. As my Dad always used to say, “Take care of your tools, and they will take care of you.”

As of the writing of this article, Amazon has this drill at a 46% discount and it ships FREE with their Super Save Shipping. Follow this link to take advantage of this Amazon Porter Cable Drill Discount.

Porter Cable includes their three year limited warranty along with a one year FREE service contract for the PC180DK-2.

Here are some great additional features for the Porter Cable Drill Kit PC180DK-2 18-Volt NiCd:

0.5″ all metal chuck – single sleeve

Kit contains 2 18 Volt NiCad batteries

LED light to improve visibility on “tight space” projects

440 inch-pounds of max torque

Side handle

As mentioned above, we believe this Porter Cable drill to be a good buy at this price point. It has great endurance, and torque – and can be used on a combination of jobs which the DIY’er would find themselves trying to accomplish.

Here is what one owner of the Porter Cable Drill Kit PC180DK-2 had to say:

…An outstanding tool I used relentlessly on a deck project… It performed well on heavy household projects for months. You should not expect a professional quality drill at this price. If you need a ‘bulletproof’ drill then you need to buy a pro version for 2x to 3x the price.
The DeWalt DCD970KL cordless drill takes a licking and keeps on drilling and hammerdrilling and any other type of “-ing” you can think of…

“…it can withstand use AND abuse! If it gets dropped, it gets up;” I am paraphrasing a review from an owner who bought the DeWalt DCD970KL drill kit for his father. This tool is a tough, professional grade tool. He adds, “…there is nothing that this thing can’t withstand that made it inoperable.” DeWalt’s reputation for producing a tough drill that does not sacrifice power and durability even though it is portable remains intact with the production of the DeWalt DCD970KL XRP. The reviews on this drill indicate that contractors and professionals use it – in fact, my brother who is a journeyman electrician from Washington State is visiting us for the Holidays and he was looking at the drill and commented, “Oh, that is the drill we use at work.”

However, just because this drill is used by professionals, doesn’t mean DIY enthusiasts are left out. As the DeWalt DCD970KL customer review above shows; home repair hobbyists love to have this drill kit.

At 6 lbs, it is a heavier drill. One feature which takes some getting used to, is the hammer feature. Even if you are not using the hammer function, you may find the chuck has a little play back and forth which can cause some to lose control of the bit. However, the DeWalt DCD970KL is a hammerdrill, and any hammerdrill will function slightly different than a standard drill. With a little patience to adjust, I think you will find this drill kit to be a great addition to your repertoire of high quality tools. My first hammerdrill took some time to get used to, but once I did, I loved it – my current hammerdrill is a DeWalt corded drill.

While writing this article, I found the price for this drill kit (it can go for over $635…) This drill Kit is currently available from Amazon at a whopping 59% discount! Click this link to take advantage of this massive discount on the DeWalt DCD970KL XRP Drill Kit!

Please note: While the DeWalt DCD970KL XRP drill kit is made for professionals, folks who want to get their home repairs done quickly and without hassle will find this drill invaluable.

Some of the features you will find of the DEWALT DCD970KL 18-Volt 1/2-Inch XRP Lithium-Ion Hammerdrill/Driver/Drill Kit:

Three-year limited warranty, one-year free service, 90-day money-back guarantee

18 volt motor delivering 450 unit watts out – Power in your hands

The 18 volt batteries included with this kit offer durability and a long battery life at an estimated 2000 re-charges.

Drill take advantage of its patented 3-speed transmission, which is all-metal and delivers the following 3 drill speed settings:

0 – 500 rpm

0 – 1250 rpm

0 – 2000 rpm

Hammerdrill mode provides the following three bpm settings:

0 – 8500 bpm

0 – 21250 bpm

0 – 34000 bpm

1/2-inch chuck which is heavy duty and self-tightening

Increased visibility in confined spaces due to the LED worklight

The DeWalt DCD970KL drill kit, includes a 360-degree side handle which can make light work of 3″ decking screws into 2″x4″s, drilling holes in cinder blocks or into steel plates. The Lithium-Ion batteries provide a better weight:power ratio than Ni-Cads do. With the only potential hiccup on this drill being minor chuck movement – if you can learn to overcome this very minor issue as your skill with the drill increases, we think you will find this to be an excellent choice to help maintain your home or if you are a professional it should help you to get your jobs done more quickly, easily and with more profit in your pocket.

Please read what one owner had to say about his DEWALT DCD970KL XRP Drill Kit

…An excellent drill with a lot of power & torque. I use it to rebuild wooden gates & fences…it is one of the best drills I have owned. The Li-Ion batteries hold up & recharge quickly. It is NOT light… but that adds to stability & reduced fatigue when drilling through thick wood – it is worth every dollar… (Gene J. Martin)

First, let me thank you for stopping by to read this review on the DeWalt DC970K-2, it is our first review and I hope you find it helpful. As you may know, DeWalt tools are known for building tools for rugged use and they are referred to as the “Musclebots” of this class of tool. Even though this DeWalt DC970K-2 18-Volt Cordless drill is lightweight and able to fit in spaces that other drills would have a tough time maneuvering in, it is still built with the high quality DeWalt 2 speed transmission which has built up DeWalt’s reputation for making high quality drills over the years. The ranges provided by this unit’s transmission goes from 0 to 450 rpm on the low end and up to 1,500 rpm on the high end.

At 5.2lbs the DeWalt DC970K-2 is light enough to be handled all day without causing user fatigue. And, as mentioned above, its compact size at 8.7 inches (Depth) by 2.5 inches (Width) and battery placement allow it to fit into very tight spaces. While its smaller size is one of its best features – I was initially concerned that the drill would not have the power required for home repair enthusiasts and especially contractors who require a more rugged, long lasting and powerful drill when they are out on the job site.

Even though I was concerned about the potential lack of power, I read testimonial after testimonial from different sites all over the internet that the DeWALT DC970K-2 does not sacrifice any power due to size or the fact that it is driven by a battery. One user on Amazon states, “…The DeWalt DC970K-2 | De Walt 18v drill has a lot of power to drive in 3″ screws into double 2″x4″s without predrilling.”

I’ve “bullet-ized” a list of some of the core cordless drill features of the DeWalt DC970K-2:

Its motor delivers maximum high performance power at 380 unit watts out

Its smaller & compact build allows it to be used in tight spaces

The light 5.2 lb design helps prevent user fatigue

Dual speed range, 0-450/0-1,500 rpm

Chuck is keyless 1/2 inch single sleeve & ratcheting providing a tighter grip for the bits used

This kit comes with 2 18 volt NiCAD batteries and a one-hour charger

As of the writing of this review, you can get this drill at a much lower price – Click to save 19% on this DeWalt DC970K-2 | De Walt 18v Drill!

As you can see from the list above, the kit comes with a one-hour charger, and many reviewers have commented on the recharge time being extremely fast; some contractors have even commented that they have been able to get through a whole day on a single charge from a single battery – of course, this depends on usage.

One DeWalt DC970K-2 | De Walt 18v Drill owner’s review which received a LOT of people voting it as helpful read as follows:

This is a great drill that will accomplish anything. I can drive 3″ construction screws and it works great as a flooring tool with its slow speed and steady start.

The only time I change batteries is when I use the one inch drill bit to drill into dry fir beams & joists. This is the drill I use for almost anything. (N. Ilyin)
